Happiness Highlights Revisited

For 18 months, I conducted a weekly gratitude practice here on this site. Then, in December of 2012, I stopped posting my Happiness Highlights – primarily because they didn’t seem to be interesting to anyone but me.

I told myself I could continue a gratitude practice on my own, and I’ve tried to do just that. I’ve used an iPhone app and I’ve set out to journal daily. But I haven’t been able to get in the habit consistently.

Why try to fix what isn’t broken?

Posting a weekly round up of the things I’m grateful for might not be a big crowd pleaser, but the process changed my life. It changed how I view the world around me and my place in it. That’s more important to me than traffic, so I’m bringing the Happiness Highlights back.

This week, I am grateful for:

Pets that I didn’t expect to fall in love with. (But seriously, how cute is he?)

A view overlooking waterfalls.

A beautiful capture.

A family hiking trip.

Refrigerator poems,
and the generosity of a friend who sent us this magnetic poetry happiness kit.

What made you happy this week? Share your own  happiness highlights in the comment. I’ll send one of you your own magnetic poetry happiness kit, because something this fun should be shared.  Updated: congratulations, Lauren Cephas! Check your email for further instructions from me. :-)

  1. PEEGS!! They are so funny! They constantly look like they’re surprised!

Hahahaha, they kind of do! And this one is so chubby, holding him reminds me of holding a fat baby.

  2. Sarah says:

A husband who is well on his way to renivating our master bathroom. Being done with the first week of school and feeling in more of a routine since we started a week before many other districts!

My chance at being home witth my kids and feeling glad that it is a choice that works for me and my family.

    • Miss Britt says:

Great list of both big and small things! As much as I miss my kids when they go back to school, I do love the return of routine.

  3. Li-ling says:

Hi Britt, Thank you so much for writing this.
I so so believe in the Power of Gratitude. Amazing things have happened (for me) from simply being grateful. If it helps one of the things I do is write daily in the iCal app (as my phone, ipad and computer are synced it doesn’t matter which I use). I generally make an entry for 9pm every day that simply says Thanks and then make a list of all the things I’m grateful for each day.

This week, I’m grateful for 1) living in a beautiful city 2) a loving family 3) amazing friends with whom we have a wonderful time full of laughs 4)lessons in learning to trust.

I live in a beautiful city, too, and fall is when she REALLY shines. I’m actually excited for the weather to cool so the leaves can start changing!

  4. Beth says:

I am happy that we found a church to visit that invited us to join them for a cookout yesterday. I am thankful for getting a library card so i can read books and my children can read books too.

    • Miss Britt says:

Oh man, I can appreciate this. We haven’t had a church home since we lived in Iowa, and I really miss that. Glad you’re finding yours.

  5. Lisa says:

    Funny little furball!

I am grateful for job interviews, hours without smoke in the air so I can run, and Labor Day sales so I can make a dent in rebuilding my wardrobe with clothes appropriate for a job instead of just jeans & maxi skirts. I’m grateful for my health and fitness, and that I have hopefully finally landed in my new standard size. I’m super grateful for the call I got yesterday from a photog mentor & friend asking me to second shoot for him because he has “absolute faith” in my skills & eye and we work so well together. I would be even more grateful if a scheduling conflict wasn’t in the way of taking that job, but hearing that from someone whose skills I really respect meant a lot.

It was a pretty good week!

I’ve been thinking of you lots this week. I miss your face! I’m wishing you good luck on your interviews. xo

  6. The commitment of a client working through particularly hard times, dancing to crazy music at an outdoor festival, watching what an incredible man my son is growing into.

  7. Talia says:

An unexpected visit from my daughter. She works full time and goes to school full time, so her time is precious! Loved spending the time with her!!

  8. Nanna says:

I LOVE seeing your happiness highlights. Makes me go, “oh yeah! She has x and that reminds me that I have y.” And I am obsessed with those magnets!

Yeah? I would offer to get you some for Christmas, but isn’t your fridge already pretty decked out?

  9. So it is not a crowd pleaser…I’m with you 100%! If this is the motivation you need to recognize what is grateful in your life, go with it. After all, you will attract what you think about most…why not make it your favorites experiences or things that make you the happiest?! It’s a never ending circle…

  10. Lauren Cephas says:

Realizing how sweet and warm it is to be in love. Realizing life can be so freeing if you just let it go. Family time at the beach. The energy of an outdoor music festival. Rekindling cool friendships. The fun and excitement of DIY projects! That welcoming feeling when I walk in the door to my home.

  11. Jez says:

I think this post is brilliant.

I have a similar process that I do everyday myself where I list a few things that I appreciate in my life. This has really brought amazing changes in my life.

Being grateful for what you have in life brings you more of those things to be grateful for…
