Happiness Highlights: First Day of Schools

Monday, September 3rd, 2012

We finally had our turn at the first day of school thing around here last week.

I brought the kids out in front of the house to take the obligatory “first day” photos, like you do. I made a point of taking a few with the red door and blueish-grey siding behind them, so that someday they can use those background cues to identify how old they were when the photos were taken. In doing so, I officially made this home a part of their story – part of our story.

Much to my relief, the kids both enjoyed their first day of school, and then their second. Devin has made a few friends whose  names he remembers; Emma likes her teacher. I’m getting used to having alone time again, despite my concerns about sending the kids back to school.

I’m supposed to be using that alone time to work – and I am, mostly – but I also took three Bikram Yoga classes last week at a studio near my house.

I still think it is really freaking cool that there is a yoga studio near my house (in fact, there are two.)

The first class I thought I was going to die and/or throw up. The second class I rode my bike and thought I was probably the stupidest person in the world, but I didn’t even think about throwing up during class. The third time I discovered that I have weak feet muscles. Despite discovering new ways in which I am out of shape, I was really proud of myself for getting off my butt and finally trying out this style of hot yoga. And for not puking even once.

In other words, week two in Pittsburgh was a puke-free success.

What made you happy this week?

I start my week by highlighting what made me happy from the previous week because gratitude is the first step to being happy. I invite you to do the same because I want you to be happy, too. I’m a peach.

That red door ROCKS. So do your kids, and hot yoga for that matter!

Happiness this week? Knowing it’s my last week of solo parenting with no help … Levy (our helper) starts next Monday. Makes me VERY happy.

Your kids look so grown up in these photos. Especially Devin.

My 27 year old son is moving to Florida next week! He has lived alone in Massachusetts for 6 years and I have really missed him. He’ll live with us until he gets a job and saves some money.

My daughter is student teaching in Sanford and was told by HR for the county that she is pretty high up on the list to be hired before the end of the year!

I’m at a weird stage in my life that my happiness is very much influenced by how my grown-up kids are doing.

  5. This looks and sounds like a wonderful neighborhood and place for your family – I am glad it is starting off so positive for you http://pittsburgh.about.com/cs/neighborhoods/p/squirrel_hill.htm

  6. Audra says:

Great pictures! The red door is amazing! My grandparents had a door the same color. My Grandma Audrey said that red doors=good luck.

  7. Liz says:

“…week two in Pittsburgh was a puke-free success.” Hahaha! Glad you didn’t puke.

Also, I’m kind of jealous that you have a yoga studio near your house. The closest one is a couple towns over. (We had one in my city but last I knew, they weren’t taking on any new students. Sad day.)

I’m glad the kids are enjoying school, but just wait; they’ll probably start complaining about it soon enough. ;)

I hope their first days went well! Can’t imagine what that’s like after being in FL, learning from an RV for a year, and then returning to a building but in a new city. They must feel quite adventurous.
