31 Ways To Stretch Yourself On My 31st Birthday

Monday, January 17th, 2011

Today is my 31st birthday.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!

Instead of asking for presents, I’d like to ask you to celebrate with me by doing something today that stretches you outside your comfort zone.  Because that’s the kind of party animal I am.

How do you stretch yourself? By doing something you don’t normally do, of course!

Ready… set… CELEBRATE!

31 Ways To Stretch Yourself

Choose one thing from this list that you haven’t done in at least a year – or ever. Do it in the next 24 hours.

  1. Read a book that was written at least 20 years ago.
  2. Read a book that was written at least 100 years ago.
  3. Watch a black and white movie.
  4. Watch a movie that requires subtitles.  Bollywood is a fun place to start.
  5. Take pictures of things instead of people.
  6. Go 24 hours without TV.
  7. Go 24 hours without the Internet.
  8. Have sex during the day.
  9. Eat at an authentic ethnic restaurant.  The Olive Garden and Chilli’s do not count.
  10. Make a vegetarian dinner.
  11. Dance to an entire song. In your living room, on a bar, doesn’t matter.
  12. Listen to a song that doesn’t have any lyrics.
  13. Make something you can wear.  Consider beading or screen printing if you’re not sure where to start.
  14. Buy a plane ticket.
  15. Have lunch in a nearby town.
  16. Fill one box with items you no longer use.  Give it away.
  17. Make a picture of someone you love.  Use a camera, pencil, paint, or any other visual medium.
  18. Give someone a great gift.
  19. Talk to your neighbors.
  20. Go for a walk alone.
  21. Research the history of your city or state.
  22. Visit a church, mosque, synagogue, or temple.  Go inside.
  23. Plant something.
  24. Walk through the non-fiction section of a library.
  25. Treat yourself to a spa treatment.
  26. Have a conversation with someone at least 20 years older than you.  Call your grandma, visit a nursing home, chat up the guy at the bus stop.  Listen more than you talk.
  27. Read an entire newspaper.
  28. Cancel one monthly payment.
  29. Mow your lawn or shovel your sidewalk, depending on the current state of your yard.  Don’t have it done, do it yourself.
  30. Sell something.
  31. Do a crossword puzzle.

Why bother doing something new today?  Because making an effort to stretch yourself is a great way to figure out what makes you happy. And because I get a thrill out of watching people step outside their comfort zones and it’s my birthday.  Everyone should get what they ask for on their birthday.

Whatever they ask for – and cake.

Please feel free to share your experiences in the comments, on Twitter, or on your own blog.  I can’t wait to hear all about how you celebrated today!

  1. Happy Birthday! I hope you have an absolutely wonderful day.

  2. Happy Birthday to you! May you get everything you wish for and more and may the year ahead be absolutely mind blowing!!

  3. Alan Labovitz says:

Happy Birthday. I’ve been reading your blogs for several years now and have been enjoying them. Your list is interesting and I have done most of the things. For instance, it would be difficult for me to talk to someone at least 20 years older than I am since I turn 75 this month. Most of the ideas are really good ones. I do crossword puzzles every day, read newspapers (or what’s left of them) every day, watch movies on Turner Classic Movies which include black and white films. I have traveled extensively and my travels have slowed down these days since retirement money isn’t going as far as it used to because of the recession. I clean the snow off my driveway myself and mow my own lawn. I’m looking forward to hearing about you and your family’s travels. Thanks for the entertainment and information you have provided over the years. Good luck in the coming year.

    • Miss Britt says:

What a great comment, Alan. Thank you. It’s so nice to think that someone has been interested in what I’ve had to say for so long!

Now… are you telling me that you’ve run out of new things to try at 74?

  5. pocket_queen says:

Happy Birthday, Britt! I hope you have a wonderful time today, and for the rest of your 31st year. I like your idea very much, and I’m so happy to realise that I’ve actually done more than half the list in the past year. However, for you, today, I shall do number 16.
I think actually this is a good list to do for a half-year of one-year time period. I will give it a try and let you know how it goes!

  6. naomi says:

#7 would scare the crap out of me
    #8 would thrill the Husb
#20 is what I shall do

    Happy Birthday!

  7. Avitable says:

#18 is in there so that somebody can do your list and still totally get you a great gift, right? :)

Happy birthday! I’m actually stretching myself tonight by joining a stand-up class.

    • Miss Britt says:

Ha! Noooooo… it’s in there because taking the time to really consider what would be great for someone else is a good mental exercise that a lot of people don’t do often.

  8. Grumble Girl says:

    Happy Birthday, sweet girl!!

With the exception of the plane ticket, and maybe the church/synagogue visit, I think I do ALL of these things very regularly, if not daily. (As soon as my passport is back in order… watch out!) So I’ll think of you while I get my rump-shake on today…

I hope you get your every wish, and that this is your happiest of birthdays yet!! Pinches and booty-slaps… xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxox Make your year rock, sistah. ;)

    • Miss Britt says:

I actually do quite a few of these things, too, and so making an effort to keeping expanding my comfort zone can sometimes take a little more work.

Thanks for the birthday wishes, lady!!

  9. Michelle says:

Ok, I’m a freak – I do most of these normally. LOL But I agree with you that people should often step outside their comfort zones, even if it’s a tiny step. And I don’t have any cake, but I will have a donut in your honor this morning. =) Happy birthday Britt!

    • Miss Britt says:

You’re not a freak, my list was just aimed at things that could be easily done but that would include at least one thing that most people don’t make a habit of doing.

  10. ok, i hope you are happy that i am turning off my television in your honor. my dogs are gonna be PISSED because as i am here at work they are on my couch watching it and that fucker is going off as soon as i get home. because i would do anything for you. anything.
happy, happy birthday to one of the most incredible women i know. truly, you are wonderful and i am so thankful that you are in my life. can’t wait to squeeze ya tight on thursday.

  11. Tara R. says:

So many of these are things I want to do! Hope you get all you wish for on your Birthday. Happy, happy birthday!

  12. Lizzard72 says:

So wise at 31! Happy birthday!! I’m glad I found your tweets and blog.
    The list:
Hubs is home today, so maybe some nookie.
    Picture of someone I love
There will be dancing with the toddler

If I fit more in it may be tomorrow.

    Liz :)

  13. Angella says:

Mondays, I leave the house at 6:30 a.m. and don’t get home until after 9 p.m., so I’ll try one of these things…soon. ;)

    Happy, happy birthday!!

  14. Kimberly says:

Happy birthday! I love your list and although I already do some of the items, I am going to keep trying even more. I am also sharing your list because I think many others could benefit! 9, 12, and 26 are on my agenda today!

  15. Darla says:

    Happy Birthday Britt!

    {grumbles incoherently something about 20 years ago not being THAT long ago for SOME of us, AHEMMMM}

  16. Megan says:

Would it surprise you that I’ve done most of these? My recent stretch has been ditching the gym, doing the Couch to 5K program (hate running, but I’m three weeks in and not dead yet!) and starting Bikram (hot) Yoga, which is not easy.

I’m signing off the computer right now and will paint my toenails and read my book – which was recommended by Faiqa and one that I would never have picked up on my own – another score!

  17. Sybil Law says:

    Happy Birthday!
I already did number 8 – yay for kids being at grandma’s!

  18. Lisa says:

Happy Birthday, my friend! I hope your birthday brings you fabulous gifts of love and joy!

I plan on buying a plane ticket today, which I haven’t done (for me anyway) in over a year. There may also be dancing, we’ll just have to see! So far it’s been a dance-worthy day!

  19. Deb Rox says:

Happy Birthday Britt! I love all of these encouragements to break out of ruts and habits.

  20. Poppy says:

I tried for #8 today before knowing about this post, but was denied by a sleepy man who is STILL asleep. Oh well. :)

I didn’t do any of these things today, unless you consider going to a job interview on a day when almost all of the rest of the people around you are celebrating MLK Jr. Day counts as selling something. It was a fun interview. :)

    Happy birthday, again, young lady.

    • Miss Britt says:

I have a feeling that number 8 would not be a stretch for you.

The point is to do something YOU don’t normally do! lol

I had a great day. Thank you.

  21. Jen says:

I just stumbled here from an article you wrote on another site and I love this list! It made me laugh out loud because I did the same thing earlier today except I have 33 things because I am turning 33 towards the end of the year. I am afraid of #23 because nothing ever survives in my household but I will be trying a veggie garden. Happy happy birthday to you! I hope that it is a fabulous day!

  22. FireMom says:

Happy birthday! Today is one of my favorite person’s birthdays AND my cousin’s birthday. It’s also a sad day in our family as my grandpa passed away one year ago today. But we made the most of it today (and yesterday).

Anyway, I love this idea and might steal it for my 30th birthday in April. :)

I listened to quite a few instrumentals today. AND I literally stretched — at power yoga tonight. I was SO scared to go but I’m SO glad I went.

    Sending love!

    • Miss Britt says:

“I was SO scared to go but I’m SO glad I went.”

I read this on my iPhone this morning while I was still in bed and it made my day. Big smile here.

  23. Britt-
Are you absolutely, positively SURE that you are not 32?

  24. the muskrat says:

I celebrated with you without even knowing it! I read “The Richest Man in Babylon” on my kindle while flying home. It was written nearly 100 years ago. Hope your day was grand.

  25. martymankins says:

    Happy Birthday, Britt.

    Love the 31 items list.

  26. Babybloomr says:

    I’m crazy about this list!
May I have your permission to reprint your list on my blog (OF COURSE with proper credit, link to your blog, photo-ID, blah di blah blah? I could also require that my readers send you a big ol’ birthday present, too. Possibly jewelry.) It’s a fascinating idea and I would love to share it!

  27. D. Marie says:

Happy Birthday Miss Britt (I know. What rock did I crawl out from, right?) So, quick question: #2 – Can it be, like, The Bible? And does it count if you’ve only read certain verses or chapters, especially those pertaining to falling dead birds and masses of dead fish as they would pertain to possible Armageddon? Also, do Cliff Notes count?

  28. Loukia says:

Does dancing in my car every day to and from work count? :) Happy Birthday!

  29. Benny says:

I will be 33 years old in 9 months, which means I have to come out with 33 things to do? That would be interesting :D

HAPPY BIRTHDAY…. AND HAVE A GREAT ONE!
