This is what Emma looks like when she needs a haircut:
This is what Emma looked like last week, when she was way beyond needing a haircut:
This is what Emma looks like after she has finally gotten her hair cut:
And this:
And this:
And, OK, actually more like this:
Oh, so cute! So short and not tangled! So “yes, Sweetheart, you hair looks just like Grandma’s now! I know!”
But back to last Saturday, and her looking like this:
And her mother (some crazy woman) thinking “she has straight, thin hair. We cut it in a straight line. How hard can this be??”
Sigh.
She looks just like her father in this picture. As in – they both look like boys.
We call this look The Straight Ish.
And we call this the My Mother Is Going To Make Me Be Kate Gosselin For Halloween:
And she’s being such a good sport about it.
After over an hour of being perched on a barstool in the middle of our kitchen and having some crazy woman screech at her to just hold still or we will never get this done, she ran into the bathroom, took one look at herself in the mirror, and declared, “it’s fine, Mom!”
Seriously.
Just. Like. Her father.
(Who, coincidentally, has told me that I am never, ever allowed to come near him with a pair of scissors.)

Bwahahahahaha!
The hair will grow back, but the scars will remain forever.
@avitable, I DID NOT CUT HER!
oh, she is adorable. Please don’t cut anyone else’s hair. Because not many people are this adorable.
@Marinka, *sigh* Ok. It wasn’t very much fun to do anyway.
Oh, she looks darling! You had the BEST intentions! : )
@Adventures In Babywearing, welllll.. if by “best” you mean “let me save $10-$20″, then.. yes, yes I did.
Oh hush. She is so cute!
@Suebob, thank GOD.
At work we have a thing called “Octobeard” where we’re not allowed to shave our beards in October. I’m a little late myself.. because I thought it was optional.
Anyway, come November 1st, I grant you the honor of cutting my beard off. I’m looking for that Classic Emma look
@whall, What, no Movember? http://www.movember.com/
@whall, deal.
You have to come here though.
@Miss Britt, I’ll be there in April.
Why didn’t you put an upside-down bowl on her head and cut along the edge?
@muskrat, oh believe me, next time I will!
So cute – almost makes me want kids. Almost.
My dad used to cut my hair with kitchen scissors when I was little, and you did WAY better than he used to.
@corrin, you can borrow one of mine if you get the urge.
When Arianna was about 4, my mother-in-law thought it would be fine for her to take arianna to the barber w/o asking (yes, barber…this was for a reason.) Arianna came home, after leaving w/ long hair, with hair that was pretty much almost a crew cut.
I. Was. SO. Pissed!!
So, the only way I knew to keep the evil MIL from pulling that stunt again was to make it so Arianna wouldn’t go along w/ it.
So, I called her Fred for a while.
She’s still pissed at me for that. But, she hasn’t let her grandma get her hair cut again.
@adena, Emma would be THRILLED if I started calling her Fred.
Oh, it looks fine!! She’s so adorable!
@pgoodness, heh, thanks
she’s adorable…you sure you’re the mother?
@Hockeyman, let me check…
Yep. Stretch marks say – we have a match!
We’ve all done it! I perched my toddler in his high chair and cut all his lovely baby curls off. And then I cried. The good thing is that it grows back.
@floating princess, I waited until Devin’s baby curls were as long as mine before I cut them off.
Sadly, Emma never had them.
She does look JUST like her daddy! And it will be fine!
@Kristin, isn’t it crazy?? How is it possible I have a child who doesn’t look exactly like ME??
just don’t give her a perm, but really…she is too cute. I can’t imagine anyone is even paying attention to the cut.
@melissa, you know, I have done home perms before…
dear lord, that child is beautiful enough to pull off a hack job. she truly is gorgeous.
@hello haha narf, want me to cut your hair next week?
Look on the bright side. At this age, they’ll think she did it herself. ;D
@Kris, hahahaha – that’s what they said when I took her to preschool. I should have totally let her take the fall for it.
If you can make bangs sit nicely on my forehead like that, I’ll let you cut *my* hair.
Geez.
At least it’s not a chili bowl haircut with a tail. Because I totally rocked that back in 1990.
@Sheila (Charm School Reject), oh, honey, I can cut the shit out of your bangs.
Now she really is handsome!
Good thing she’s not really a girly girl.
@Finn, yeah, probably why she is being so cool about it. LOL
Awwh so cute! But, I’d hide from you if you came at me with scissors lol I would not look good rocking that do, she’s way cuter than I am
@Sarcastica, awww, come on. I’ll only charge you $5!
Just think…now she has the same stories to tell about growing up that we did. One day, everyone will laugh about this. Probably today, even.
@Hilly, I know, and I’m going to remind her that she said it was FINE!
Ha.
Oh man.
@Maria, uh huh. You laugh because you have boys.
She looks more than fine, she looks gorgeous.
But, hello, just because you’re a great writer, smart, funny, kind and wonderful doesn’t mean you can cut hair. I feel like you should have already known this. Sigh.
@Faiqa, STRAIGHT, THIN, HAIR – cutting into STRAIGHT LINE STYLE.
I mean, come on? How hard can that BE?
Ohh she’s adorable.
And this will eventually go down in family history as “that time I was too defenseless to know that I shouldn’t let my mom cut my hair.”
Fortunately, she can pull it off – it’s cute!
@ClassyFabSarah, I know. I am so going to end up as a story on her blog in 15 years.
It’s a damn good thing she is cute, Mama.
Oh I kid. It’s adorable!
@Karen Sugarpants, no, no, you are SO right. LOL
That last shot? Just simply gorgeous. If I had a daughter, I would want her to leave the same kind of impression in the camera. Damn. That picture says a lot.
@lceel, Thank you!
(Because, ya know, she’s MINE so I can totally take credit for her beauty and awesomeness.)
The bonus: Hair grows. One time I cut my own bangs down so far that they were spiky and my mom GROUNDED me until they grew back. At least you’re not grounded! LOL
@Bre, I did that once! I was trying to get my bangs to do some weird 80s thing, and ended up cutting a CHUNK out of the front of my head.
Some woman could shave her head and she would still be adorable! Her hair will grow back before you know it.
@perpstu, luckily, her hair does grow back VERY quickly.
Although, I don’t even want to think about what it will look like as it grows out.
She is precious! I have so much hair drama with my kids. I tried to cut Erin’s blonde, straight, thin hair only once. It is impossible!
@Laurin, and it looks like it should be so EASY! It’s like PAPER!
Every year, my mother used to whack the heck out of my bangs the night before school pictures. All of my elementary school photos show me with 1/2″ of bangs. Sigh.
So, puh-leeze tell me you didn’t do this just before her school pictures?? (she looks absolutely pixy-ish and adorable, by the way)
@Bonnie B., nope! No pictures!
She almost has the Victoria Beckham look going on there. I cut hair for a living and so I know that cutting blonde, fine hair is not for the faint hearted. I have two granddaughters with blonde hair, one thick and one fine. Neither are easy. Blonde hair is the one color that is really hard to cut, especially if its layered or short.
Back away from the scissors mama! lol
When my first boy was little I cut his blonde hair. I did take him to the barbershop and he wailed his head off. As I did not want to subject the barber to that again I started trimming around the perimeter. It wasn’t great because I had yet to go to hair school. But at least he looked neat and clean. I was so glad when he got old enough to go to the barbershop though.
It’s so worth the money to take them to the salon. I charge 10 bucks for a child. Not too bad huh?
Hugs,
Marie
@Marie, *sigh* my daughter loves going to the salon to get her hair cut. I have no excuse, other than trying to save time and a few bucks.
I’m so ashamed.
It could’ve been much, much worse – and she’s cute enough to get away with it. Plus, now there really shouldn’t be any tangles at all!
@Sybil Law, that’s true. It’s 100% tangle free!
So cute!
That reminds me of something… oh, yes, when my 10-year-old was almost 4:
Before and After
@Ren, awwwww – you’re welcome for that trip down memory lane!
(I WISH Emma’s hair was that thick!)
@Miss Britt, Yes, so does her sister, whose hair is quite stringy.
Oh my.
I gave my husband a haircut a few months ago and it was quite the laughable venture. Obviously, I am not meant to be a hair stylist.
@Melissa, I used to cut my boyfriend’s hair in high school. Maybe I’m just meant to cut boy hair.
I once did that to my best friend in high school.cutting hair is fucking hard, dude.
@ali, I know! They should make people go to a school for it or something!
I think its cute. I wish I could cut my daughters (4, named Emma) hair….Im tired of her screaming and crying when I brush it!
@Just Me, that’s why we keep it so short, too – because GAH! with the CRYING!
very new wave, but she is so stinkin cute its great!
@erin, right. New wave. That’s what we’re going to call it. I was totally going for this look on purpose!
Obviously you already know this but I have to say….she is absolutely gorgeous!!! And the photo where she’s covered in paint is the best!!!
@Tonz, yeahhh… I kinda think she’s gorgeous. (And that paint picture is SO her.)
She looks gorgeous.
When we were kids my father used to threaten to cut our hair if we were bold after he did such a shite job on one of my brothers hair with a bowl!!
@J from Ireland, yeah, I have a feeling I’m going to be able to use “I will totally cut your hair!” as a threat for a very long time.
she is too pretty and cute to pull off the “Kate Gosselin” look.
@the s.i.l., that’s true. We’d definitely have to draw some bags under her eyes or something.
Awww, she is adorable!! My youngest two daughter’s have hair almost all.the.way. down to their rears because of an irrational fear of scissors.
@Becca, I wish she would let me grow her hair out and put it up into all kinds of cute pony tails and braids.
But she hates anything on her head but a baseball hat.
Marinka makes a good point.
She’s gorgeous and looks so much like her momma!
I think everyone has a bad haircut story. My four-year-old goddaughter recently decided to play hairdresser and chopped her hair off!!
I think it’s so cool that Emma was such a good sport! It will grow back, and now you have a funny haircut story! (:
[...] And the lice? Were gone, never to come back. But I had one hell of a horrible haircut, worse than the haircut Britt recently gave her daughter Emma — I promise!! (I refuse to post pictures, because it truly was that [...]
One time my wife was cutting my hair with clippers when she used an “ear attachment” without knowing what it did. It took weeks for the bald spot to grow back.
She can totally pull off that cut.
I think she looks cute as a damn button with that haircut (but don’t tell her, I hear she hates that word “cute”).
Awww, she’s adorable no matter what her hair looks like!
i HEARD that if you tie it in a low ponytail and cut above the rubberband, it will look like a professional cut.
my boyfriend’s seven year old daughter says that’s the way her mom cuts her hair, and it’s always really cute. she has stick straight hair, too. the back is a little shorter than the front.
the only problem would be the bangs. i don’t know how to do bangs. keep chopping ’till their even? yeah, something like that.
ummmm…. i came across this video and couldn’t finish it.
