I don’t know if you know this about me, but I am awesome.
In fact, I am so awesome that I recently won a movie trivia game on the BlogTalk Radio Show, “Turnbaby Talks“. And as reward for my awesome display of awesomenicity, Turnbaby sent me a gift certificate for Netflix!
I’ve never had Netflix before. (I know, I’m so uncool.) I was so excited to finally be able to watch all of the movies that the rest of the world saw two years ago!! I signed up and immediately began the process of adding movies to my Queue (which is English for “holding pattern” or “line”. The English are so funny.).
I added all of six movies before realizing I had no freaking clue what I should request.
I tried the “Movies We Think You’ll Love” recommendations. But the Brilliant Robot Designed To Read My Mind kept suggesting movies even I had seen, or movies I’d have to be ridiculously desperate to watch. (I’m not sure how the fact that I liked “The Passion of the Christ” indicates that I’d be interested in “Veggie Tales: Are You My Neighbor?”)
Clearly, I need some inspiration.
–> This is where you come in. <–
What movies do I just have to see?
Add your suggestions in the comments. One suggestion per comment. Multiple suggestions OK!
The winner will receive their very own gift certificate for Netflix! (Unless you already have it or something… in which case… we’ll figure something out.)
The winner will be chosen based on your suggestions: aka, movies I actually want to add to the queue.
Contest will be open until (randomly pulling deadline out of ass…):
Wednesday February 27th at MIDNIGHT Eastern Standard Time.
Help a girl out! Make my movie night!

Grosse Pointe Blank. John Cusack as a hitman who goes home for his 10-year high school reunion. Lots of great 80s music plus some dark humor. I’m bringing it over one of these nights as part of your movie education.

You have to see The Corndog Man. It’s the greatest movie ever made.
And as a bonus there is no need to add it to your qeue because it’s in the watch instantly section. It’s magical.

You should *totally* see ‘Across the Universe’
hgreatone:
… but only if you like (or even are neutral about) musicals, and music by The Beatles (because if you dislike either of those things I guess the movie probably wouldn’t be utterly amazing).
*slinks back into lurk-dom*
Lake Placid – damn, I love this movie – and Juno.

My favorites right now are Reign Over Me (fantastic movie!) Why Did I Get Married?, Music and Lyrics (If you like Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant…which I DO) and Black Book (It’s a Dutch movie but since I am moving to the land of the Dutch, I bought it and it’s great!) And by the way, I just realize from reading your archives that you live probably 25-30 minutes from me. Small world!

At WordPress’ request I am going to list multiple movies in this post:
Swordfish
High Fidelity
Empire Records
Resident Evil (1)
Wizards
Dark Star
Harvey
Evil Dead (the whole series)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (old and new)
A good place to start on NetFlix is the “Top 100″ list. That is unless you’re only looking for “I’m so cool I don’t watch mainstream movies only the intellectually superior art house and independent films” type. Cause then I don’t know what to suggest.
Anyway, how far behind are you on film watching? Have you seen the classics like Casablanca, To Kill a Mockingbird, Battleship Potemkin, The Birth of a Nation, The French Connection and all the great ones from back in the day?
Okay, so the rules are only one per comment. Sorry.
Here’s my first recommendation:

OOohh movies! I’m about to list a million. You’ve probably seen a lot of them, but I lost lists! And movies! Watch out!
Monsoon Wedding
La Vie En Rose
Almost Famous
What Dreams May Come
Oh…I just reread the rules. Um. Those choices still stand, but my official contest submission is….
My Wife is an Actress/Ma femme est une actrice
It has Charlotte Gainsbourg & Yvan Attal, who are actually together in real life. They’re not married, but they’ve been together since she was 18 (and she’s like 35 now) and have two babies, and they’re French and wonderful. It’s the most adorable French love story-film ever.
ALSO…this: Ils se marièrent et eurent beaucoup d’enfants (…And They Lived Happily Ever After). Same couple, different plot. It’s not as sweet as the first, but they’re both really realistic, and to me, really represent the universality of love. What I mean is that regardless of how much money you do or don’t have, and numerous other variables, we all have similar things that happen in our relationships and marriages.
ANyway, sorry this is so long. But even if I don’t win, you should check out those movies, as long as subtitles don’t bother you, because they are amazing.
Walk the Line (Reese Whitherspoon might have won the Oscar, but Joaquin Phoenix was freaking amazing as Johnny Cash)

If you were looking for kid friendly I was going to recommend
Eight Below – My kids loved it – and it’s good enough that I didn’t go nuts watching it with them the first time.
Fantastagirl’s last blog post..Alive
We rented “the Game Plan” last weekend -Mr. Incredible even said it was pretty good.
As you can probably guess most of what we watch, if we watch is kid friendly.
Fantastagirl’s last blog post..Alive
I recommend The Lake House (total chick flick), National Treasure, and Talladega Nights (totally hysterical). :lmao:
Also, I would have to say that anything my buddy Jay recommends has to be good.
J.
HoosierGirl’s last blog post..The Answers…….AND…..Your Grades.
The Life of David Gale – not a kid movie
Radio – A feel-good movie. Yes, it’s about sports, but even people who HATE sports fall in love with this movie.
Kicking and Screaming – kid-friendly and hilarious
And as for previous suggestions, I thought Moulin Rouge was the worst movie EVER! But to each her own…

I have one more
Taxi
not the bag of utter shite that is the American version either (no offence meant)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0152930/
Taxi 2 (again the french version is also very good)
Sorry I know thats two
everyone should see hot fuzz. Simon Pegg is a god among men. Avitable’s suggestion is good too, as is the kevin smith recomendation ( I’d go for chasing amy)
dan’s last blog post..“It’s all Greek to me” Sunday
Baby Boy
There are so many good movies listed so far…. My contribution is Quinceanera. Also I’d recommend Auntie Mame and Casablanca if you are an old movie fan.
Eventually you should request a list of movies you should not bother watching. That way you won’t need to watch the whole movie to find out what happens. I wish someone had told me not to bother with a few of my netflix choices, I’d get a few hours of my life back.

Already recommended that I agree are great:
My Cousin Vinny – freaking funny! Highly recommend.
The Pirates of the Caribbean – loved ‘em all
Game Plan was cute.
Live Free Or Die Hard – very action packed
Crank – loved the movie – NOT Kid Friendly though…
Finding Nemo
and
CARS
I have no idea what you’ve seen so this isn’t easy. But you could shoot for Waitress. Pretty good film that is recent.
kapgar’s last blog post..I feeeeeeel you…
I’m surprised no one has recommended “The Brave One” starring Jody Foster. She really brings off the dark side of herself. No plucky submissive here. She kicks some major ass!
Al Warren’s last blog post..A Story
So I obviously didn’t follow directions, what with my two movie suggestions in one comment deal, but I’ve got more for you now.
Super Troopers. Since you’ve had two children, you will most definitely pee your pants, be warned.
PS: Avitable, Facing the Giants is definitely an awesome movie. Especially for the Jesus Christ Superstars of Blogland.

Band of Brothers
(It’s not a movie, but a mini-series from a few years back. It’s about WWII. While I’m not into war movies, this was wonderful. Besides, Damien Lewis is a hottie.)
i know you like football (or is it that you only like gb?) so another suggestion is grid iron gang. my boyfriend the rock stars in it so i thought it was gonna be cute or, well i guess i don’t know what i thought. but it was a really good movie about his character (based on a real life guy) starting a football program at the jouvie joint where he worked. i love the movie and MUST watch it every time i realize that it is on cable.
so check out gridiron gang.
oh, and another movie i must watch every damn time it is on is national treasure. i’m sure you have seen it already, but great flick. just wish i had the self control to change the channel someimes. i mean, it wasn’t THAT great of a flick, right?
Kid friendly-the Nightmare Before Christmas
Not kid firendly-Four rooms…Seriously funny!!
Antonio Banderas, Madonna, Bruce Willis, A gaggle of other stars! WORTH IT!
I’ve never lied to you about movies!

Just add me to your friends list. I’m an art house movie snob and see a lot of independent films that no one has heard of. I’m excellent about rating them and try to write reviews whenever I have something to say – heh.
I adore the Netflix friend feature.

the labyrinth (with david bowie) is a spectacular 80′s mess that has a slew of jim henson’s muppet creatures as goblins and monsters.
it is one of my favorite movies of all time. hope you are in the right frame of mind one night and get a chance to enjoy it.
have you seen the long kiss goodnight with geena davis as an ass kicking spy? samuel l. jackson is also in it as a private eye. LOVE that movie. it is a good kind of bad.
speaking of privagte eye…add bruce willis as “the last boyscout” to your watching list. love that movie!
