Who Wants A Movie Night?

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

I don’t know if you know this about me, but I am awesome.

In fact, I am so awesome that I recently won a movie trivia game on the BlogTalk Radio Show, “Turnbaby Talks“. And as reward for my awesome display of awesomenicity, Turnbaby sent me a gift certificate for Netflix!

I’ve never had Netflix before. (I know, I’m so uncool.) I was so excited to finally be able to watch all of the movies that the rest of the world saw two years ago!! I signed up and immediately began the process of adding movies to my Queue (which is English for “holding pattern” or “line”. The English are so funny.).

I added all of six movies before realizing I had no freaking clue what I should request.

I tried the “Movies We Think You’ll Love” recommendations. But the Brilliant Robot Designed To Read My Mind kept suggesting movies even I had seen, or movies I’d have to be ridiculously desperate to watch. (I’m not sure how the fact that I liked “The Passion of the Christ” indicates that I’d be interested in “Veggie Tales: Are You My Neighbor?”)

Clearly, I need some inspiration.

–> This is where you come in. <–

What movies do I just have to see?

Add your suggestions in the comments. One suggestion per comment. Multiple suggestions OK!

The winner will receive their very own gift certificate for Netflix! (Unless you already have it or something… in which case… we’ll figure something out.)

The winner will be chosen based on your suggestions: aka, movies I actually want to add to the queue.

Contest will be open until (randomly pulling deadline out of ass…):

Wednesday February 27th at MIDNIGHT Eastern Standard Time.

Help a girl out! Make my movie night!

  1. avitable says:

Grosse Pointe Blank. John Cusack as a hitman who goes home for his 10-year high school reunion. Lots of great 80s music plus some dark humor. I’m bringing it over one of these nights as part of your movie education.

You have to see The Corndog Man. It’s the greatest movie ever made.

And as a bonus there is no need to add it to your qeue because it’s in the watch instantly section. It’s magical.

  8. Alycia says:

You should *totally* see ‘Across the Universe’ :o hgreatone:

… but only if you like (or even are neutral about) musicals, and music by The Beatles (because if you dislike either of those things I guess the movie probably wouldn’t be utterly amazing).

    High Fidelity
    Empire Records
    Resident Evil (1)
    Wizards
    Dark Star
    Harvey
    Evil Dead (the whole series)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (old and new)

  36. Jay says:

A good place to start on NetFlix is the “Top 100″ list. That is unless you’re only looking for “I’m so cool I don’t watch mainstream movies only the intellectually superior art house and independent films” type. Cause then I don’t know what to suggest.

Anyway, how far behind are you on film watching? Have you seen the classics like Casablanca, To Kill a Mockingbird, Battleship Potemkin, The Birth of a Nation, The French Connection and all the great ones from back in the day?

Okay, so the rules are only one per comment. Sorry.

    Here’s my first recommendation:

    Ronin

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0122690/

    Jay’s last blog post..Saturday Poll: TV’s Hottest Moms …

  37. Jay says:

A Prairie Home Companion (If you like the radio program, you’ll love the movie.)

and i second the vote for:
    amelie
    pirates of the carribean

  39. stephanie says:

OOohh movies! I’m about to list a million. You’ve probably seen a lot of them, but I lost lists! And movies! Watch out!

    Monsoon Wedding
    La Vie En Rose
    Almost Famous
    What Dreams May Come

Oh…I just reread the rules. Um. Those choices still stand, but my official contest submission is….
My Wife is an Actress/Ma femme est une actrice
It has Charlotte Gainsbourg & Yvan Attal, who are actually together in real life. They’re not married, but they’ve been together since she was 18 (and she’s like 35 now) and have two babies, and they’re French and wonderful. It’s the most adorable French love story-film ever.

ALSO…this: Ils se marièrent et eurent beaucoup d’enfants (…And They Lived Happily Ever After). Same couple, different plot. It’s not as sweet as the first, but they’re both really realistic, and to me, really represent the universality of love. What I mean is that regardless of how much money you do or don’t have, and numerous other variables, we all have similar things that happen in our relationships and marriages.

ANyway, sorry this is so long. But even if I don’t win, you should check out those movies, as long as subtitles don’t bother you, because they are amazing.

  40. Jay says:

Walk the Line (Reese Whitherspoon might have won the Oscar, but Joaquin Phoenix was freaking amazing as Johnny Cash)

The Life of David Gale – not a kid movie

Radio – A feel-good movie. Yes, it’s about sports, but even people who HATE sports fall in love with this movie.

Kicking and Screaming – kid-friendly and hilarious

And as for previous suggestions, I thought Moulin Rouge was the worst movie EVER! But to each her own…

  49. LeapnLzrds says:

There are so many good movies listed so far…. My contribution is Quinceanera. Also I’d recommend Auntie Mame and Casablanca if you are an old movie fan.

Eventually you should request a list of movies you should not bother watching. That way you won’t need to watch the whole movie to find out what happens. I wish someone had told me not to bother with a few of my netflix choices, I’d get a few hours of my life back.

i know you like football (or is it that you only like gb?) so another suggestion is grid iron gang. my boyfriend the rock stars in it so i thought it was gonna be cute or, well i guess i don’t know what i thought. but it was a really good movie about his character (based on a real life guy) starting a football program at the jouvie joint where he worked. i love the movie and MUST watch it every time i realize that it is on cable.
